12-year-old Winter Haven boy, Noah Gomez dies in tragic Lake Roy boating accident

Winter Haven, FL – A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Lake Roy as 12-year-old Noah Alfred Gomez lost his life in a devastating boating accident during a family outing on Tuesday afternoon.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) confirmed the recovery of Noah’s body around 4:43 p.m., following an extensive search and rescue operation. Speaking at a press conference, Sheriff Grady Judd expressed deep sorrow over the incident and highlighted the heroic efforts of Noah’s father, who risked his own life in a desperate attempt to save his son.

A Spring Break Outing Turns Tragic

Noah was enjoying a spring break fishing and swimming trip with his father, 9-year-old brother Javier Gomez, and 10-year-old cousin Gael Vasquez when the outing took a devastating turn. The family had set out onto Lake Roy hoping for a fun-filled day together, unaware that rapidly changing weather conditions would put them in grave danger.

As the children swam near the boat, strong winds—reaching up to 30 miles per hour—created treacherous conditions, making it difficult for them to stay afloat. Noah’s father acted swiftly, managing to pull Javier and Gael back onto the boat. However, Noah had drifted farther away, struggling against the churning water.

A Father’s Valiant Attempt to Save His Son

Desperate to rescue his child, Noah’s father jumped into the water, reaching his son and lifting him onto his back as he attempted to swim back toward the boat. However, before he could make it to safety, Noah slipped off and disappeared beneath the surface.

One of the children aboard the boat immediately dialed 911, prompting an urgent response from PCSO, the Winter Haven Police Department, and Polk County Fire Rescue. Rescue teams, including marine units, sonar devices, drones, and helicopters, were deployed in an effort to locate Noah. Despite the swift and coordinated response, it was too late. His body was recovered nearly two hours later, submerged in 20 feet of water.

Community Mourns an Unimaginable Loss

Sheriff Judd reflected on the tragedy, emphasizing the father’s valiant efforts:
“What do good dads do? They spend time with their children. Unfortunately, as a result of today, his son drowned.”

The sheriff also urged caution for those venturing into open waters, especially under unpredictable weather conditions.

Traffic delays were reported along Cypress Gardens Boulevard, where emergency teams had mobilized during the rescue operation. Authorities advised local drivers to seek alternate routes.

A Heartfelt Outpouring of Support

The tragic loss of Noah Gomez has left the Winter Haven community in mourning. Friends, neighbors, and well-wishers have rallied around the Gomez family, offering condolences and support during this incredibly difficult time.

Noah’s passing serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the importance of water safety. His untimely loss has left an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him.

The community will honor Noah’s memory, ensuring that his life—though tragically cut short—is never forgotten.
