IRON COUNTY, WI – Authorities have identified 29-year-old Walker Kempen as the victim of a fatal crash that occurred Sunday night on US Highway 51 in Iron County.
Details of the Crash
According to investigators, Kempen was driving a silver Audi A4 southbound on US Highway 51 when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll into a ditch. The impact of the crash resulted in Kempen being ejected from the vehicle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the vehicle survived and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The identity of the passenger has not been disclosed.
Investigation Findings
Preliminary reports from the Wisconsin State Patrol indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash, as both Kempen and his passenger had alcohol in their system at the time of the accident. Additionally, investigators noted that neither individual was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
Authorities are continuing to investigate whether other factors, such as speed or road conditions, contributed to the crash.
Hazardous Weather Conditions
The deadly accident happened as Northwoods was dealing with a severe ice storm, which left over 95,000 customers without power. The storm created hazardous driving conditions across the region, with icy roads and poor visibility likely playing a role in the crash.
Residents in the area reported slick highways and dangerous travel conditions throughout Sunday night and early Monday morning, leading to multiple accidents across the region.
Community Reaction
News of Kempen’s tragic passing has shaken the Mercer community, where he was well known and respected. Friends and family described him as a kind and adventurous spirit, deeply connected to the Northwoods region.
“He was always someone you could count on,” said a close friend. “Losing him this way is heartbreaking.”
Importance of Road Safety
Law enforcement officials are once again urging the public to prioritize road safety, especially during hazardous weather conditions. They are reminding drivers of the importance of wearing seat belts, driving sober, and exercising caution when roads are icy or wet.
The Wisconsin State Patrol continues to investigate the accident, and further details may be released as the case develops.
