30-year-old Neena Wang of California and 57-year-old Sylvette Campbell Obituary, Cause Of Death: Tragedy on I-96: Authorities Identify Victims of Fiery Crash in Novi

Novi, Michigan — A devastating crash on Interstate 96 near Beck Road early Tuesday morning claimed the lives of two drivers and closed the freeway for nearly six hours. Authorities have identified the victims as 30-year-old Neena Wang of California and 57-year-old Sylvette Campbell of Westland, Michigan.

The accident occurred just after 2 a.m., when an Acura sedan driven by Wang experienced a driver-side tire issue. According to Novi officials, Wang’s vehicle came to a stop in the left lane of eastbound I-96. Moments later, a Kia driven by Campbell collided with the disabled car from behind.

The impact caused a massive fire, engulfing both vehicles and fatally injuring the drivers before emergency crews could intervene. Police confirmed that neither vehicle had passengers, and no other motorists were injured.

The crash scene required hours of cleanup and investigation. Eastbound I-96 remained closed until 9 a.m. while crews removed debris, extinguished lingering flames, and cleared spilled fuel.

“This was a complex scene with significant debris and fire damage,” Novi police said in a statement. “The extended closure was necessary to ensure the safety of motorists when the highway reopened.”

The Michigan State Police assisted Novi officers with the investigation. Early reports indicate that visibility and traffic were limited due to the early hour, leaving Campbell little time to react to the suddenly disabled vehicle in the left lane.

The deaths of Wang and Campbell underscore the dangers posed by disabled vehicles on high-speed roadways, particularly in low-light or early morning conditions. Authorities often advise drivers experiencing vehicle trouble to pull over to the shoulder if possible, activate hazard lights, and remain out of the vehicle until help arrives. Tragically, in this case, circumstances aligned for a fatal outcome.

Friends and family are mourning the sudden loss. Wang, just 30 years old, was far from home when her life was cut short, while Campbell, a longtime Westland resident, is remembered as a kind and hardworking woman whose sudden passing has left loved ones devastated.

The Novi Police Department extended condolences to both families, noting that every roadway fatality impacts not only family members but also first responders, witnesses, and the broader community.

As the investigation continues, officials emphasize the importance of roadway safety awareness in hopes of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
