Deltona, FL – A tragic case of domestic violence unfolded in the early hours of the morning when Ashley Vaia, 38, was fatally shot in her home by her ex-husband, Samuel Vaia, 33, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO).
The shooting occurred at 2:23 a.m. on Parma Drive in Deltona. Authorities say it was Ashley’s teenage daughter who discovered her mother’s body and alerted authorities.

Suspect Fled, Captured After High-Speed Chase and Standoff
Following the shooting, Samuel Vaia fled the scene, triggering an extensive manhunt. Law enforcement officials tracked his white SUV speeding north on Interstate 95 at over 100 mph as it left Volusia County. Authorities deployed stop sticks, causing his vehicle to crash in Flagler County.

A standoff ensued, involving SWAT teams, before deputies were able to take him into custody. Upon arrest, he was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Deputies confirmed later that Samuel Vaia succumbed to his injuries.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to investigators, Samuel Vaia was armed and wearing body armor at the time of the attack. His father, who lives nearby, contacted police and reported that his son had left the house dressed in camouflage gear and carrying two firearms.
Ashley Vaia leaves behind three children, ages 2, 19, and 21.
History of Domestic Violence
Authorities confirmed that Samuel Vaia had been arrested just last weekend on battery charges involving the same victim.
Deputies responded to a March 23 domestic disturbance, during which Ashley Vaia reported that her ex-husband had entered her bedroom, taken her phone, and accused her of infidelity. Despite their previous separation, the couple was attempting to reconcile, and he still had access to her home due to a child custody arrangement.
Following his arrest, Samuel Vaia was ordered to surrender all firearms and turned in three weapons, according to authorities. However, he was still able to arm himself again before carrying out the attack.
Sheriff’s Statement on Domestic Violence
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood condemned the tragic killing, emphasizing the dangers of escalating domestic violence situations.
“Our hearts go out to Ashley’s children, and all her family and friends who have to deal with losing her to such a senseless act of violence,” Chitwood said. “Time and time again, we see that domestic violence situations can escalate quickly and dangerously, with tragic consequences.”
The sheriff also expressed frustration, saying, “This guy was hellbent on killing her.”
