4-year-old A’Ziyah Donelson  killed in Southern Dallas “accidental” shooting – REPORT

A heartbreaking tragedy shook the Southern Dallas community early Monday morning when a 4-year-old girl was fatally shot in what authorities are calling a devastating accident. The incident occurred inside a gated apartment complex in the 9700 block of Community Circle, where Dallas police responded to a call just after 10:30 a.m. about a child who had been shot.

Upon arrival, officers found the young girl unresponsive inside one of the apartment units. First responders immediately administered emergency aid before rushing her to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite all life-saving efforts, the child succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

According to preliminary information released by the Dallas Police Department, the child was inside the apartment when the gun went off. Authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances surrounding the shooting but said it appears to be accidental. Investigators are working to determine who had access to the firearm, how it was stored, and how the child came into contact with it.

Neighbors expressed shock and grief at the news. “She was just a baby,” said one tearful resident. “You never expect something like this to happen so close to home—especially in a gated community where you think your kids are safe.”

Police have not yet released the identity of the child, pending notification of extended family members. However, loved ones who gathered at the scene described her as a joyful, energetic little girl who loved playing outside and waving to neighbors. A small memorial has since been set up near the front entrance of the complex, with stuffed animals, balloons, and handwritten notes left in her memory.

“This is a tragic reminder of the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia in a brief statement Monday afternoon. “As we continue to investigate, we urge all gun owners to store their weapons safely and out of reach of children.”

No arrests have been made at this time, but police confirmed that detectives are conducting interviews and gathering evidence. The case may be referred to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation concludes.

The Dallas Police Department’s Child Abuse Unit is leading the investigation.

In response to the incident, local gun safety advocates are renewing calls for stronger firearm storage laws and greater education about child gun safety. Mothers Against Gun Violence, a local nonprofit, has announced plans to hold a vigil and community outreach event later this week to both honor the child and raise awareness.

“Our hearts are broken,” said a spokesperson for the organization. “We will not stop until no more families have to suffer this kind of loss.”

As the community mourns, many are left grappling with the senselessness of the tragedy and the painful reminder that one moment of carelessness can change a life forever. Grief counselors will be made available for residents and family members impacted by the incident.

The name of the child and further details will be shared once released by the authorities. For now, Southern Dallas is united in sorrow over a life taken far too soon.
