45-year-old Nickolas Thompson of Salem killed in Amtrak train collision at the Pittsburgh Street crossing

When a Salem man’s vehicle struck an Amtrak passenger train on Friday morning, he was killed.

Nickolas Thompson, 45, was declared deceased at the scene, according to the Columbiana Police Department. Shortly before six in the morning, the collision occurred at the Pittsburgh Street crossing.

The railroad crossing gates were down, according to the police, and Thompson walked around them before the train hit him.

The inquiry is still under progress.

The Amtrak passenger train had more than 100 passengers. It was a train from Chicago. Before continuing on to Miami, Florida, it made a stop in Pittsburgh.

The tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern, and workers are currently repairing the crossing. That intersection is still closed as of right moment.
