Lehigh County, PA – The Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed the identity of the victim in a devastating wrong-way crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) in Lehigh County.
John Sweeney, 50, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning when an SUV, traveling in the wrong direction, struck a group of motorcyclists. According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio, Sweeney was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:10 a.m. The crash took place at mile marker 67 in Washington Township.
Details of the Tragic Collision
Authorities reported that Sweeney was riding with a group of six motorcyclists, heading northbound on I-476, when the unthinkable happened. A 24-year-old woman from New Jersey, driving an SUV, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided with the group. The crash, which occurred around 9 a.m., resulted in catastrophic injuries.
In addition to Sweeney’s fatal injuries, another motorcyclist—a 24-year-old man from Bristol—was injured and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for medical treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed. The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries in the accident.
Traffic Disruptions and Investigation
Following the deadly collision, northbound traffic on I-476 was brought to a standstill as emergency responders worked at the scene. The Pennsylvania State Police, along with accident reconstruction experts, spent several hours investigating the crash before reopening the roadway.
