DALLAS, TX — A well-known small business owner was shot and killed inside The Shops at RedBird on Tuesday afternoon in what authorities are calling a targeted incident involving a known acquaintance.
The victim, identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office as 53-year-old Jaime Alejandro Rokkett, was the owner of the popular kiosk Cookies ‘N Smoothies, located within the South Dallas shopping center.
According to Dallas police, officers responded to the 3600 block of West Camp Wisdom Road shortly after 4 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Paramedics from Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived at the scene, but Rokkett was pronounced dead.
Investigators say Rokkett and the suspect were acquainted and had a documented history, including a restraining order the victim had filed against the alleged shooter. Sources told WFAA that the two got into a verbal altercation shortly before the suspect produced a firearm and opened fire.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene but later turned herself in to Arlington Police, authorities confirmed. The identity of the suspect has not yet been officially released, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, the management at The Shops at RedBird described the shooting as an isolated, targeted act of violence and emphasized that it was not a random event.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate and will continue to take every step necessary to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.”
The shopping center also noted its existing 24/7 security patrols, surveillance systems, and ongoing coordination with local police, adding that security procedures are under review in the wake of the incident.
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-Dallas) responded to the news on social media, expressing condolences and appreciation for the swift response by law enforcement:
“My heart is with the loved ones of the victim, and I’m grateful to law enforcement for acting quickly,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The tragedy has cast a shadow over a revitalized retail hub that has become a symbol of economic growth in South Dallas. Many in the community are mourning the loss of a beloved entrepreneur who was known for his warm presence and dedication to his business.
Further details, including potential charges and court proceedings, are expected in the coming days as police continue their investigation.
