DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A tragic crash in Lower Paxton Township claimed two lives Friday evening, prompting a large emergency response and a road closure along a busy stretch of US 22.
According to the Lower Paxton Township Police Department, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Jonestown Road, near the AutoZone store. Authorities say a taxi and a van collided, causing the taxi to continue on and ultimately crash into a wall.
Police confirmed that the 65-year-old male taxi driver and one male passenger both died as a result of the crash. A female passenger in the taxi sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Her condition has not yet been released.
The driver of the van involved in the crash was reportedly not injured and is cooperating fully with investigators.
Numerous emergency responders—including Lower Paxton Township Police, fire crews, and the Dauphin County Coroner’s Office—responded to the scene, which was closed to traffic for several hours as the investigation unfolded.
Officials have not released the names of the deceased as they work to notify next of kin.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant dashcam footage to contact the Lower Paxton Township Police Department.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area during the closure, as traffic was rerouted while crews worked the scene.
