9/11 survivor firefighter, Thomas Dunn dies unexpectedly; Tributes

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Firefighter Thomas Dunn of Engine 234, who passed away on February 1, 2025, in Florida.

Born on December 9, 1972, Thomas served with the FDNY with remarkable dedication and bravery, especially during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Thomas was among the first responders at Ground Zero, and despite surviving the collapses of both towers, he spent months sifting through the wreckage in search of victims.

The toll of his selfless service took a heavy physical and emotional toll, as he struggled for years with chronic asthma, severe respiratory problems, and various health issues caused by prolonged exposure to the toxic fumes and debris at Ground Zero.

Though he exhibited incredible strength, Thomas faced significant personal challenges due to his 9/11-related illnesses.

On February 1, 2025, he tragically took his own life. His passing is a poignant reminder of the lasting sacrifices made by first responders, long after the immediate crisis has passed.

In a statement to Channel 2 News, his uncle expressed, “Thomas was a true hero who carried the weight of 9/11 every day. His bravery saved lives, but the invisible wounds took their toll. We will never forget.”

The Dunn family has requested privacy as they honor Thomas’s memory. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in peace, Firefighter Thomas Dunn—courageous protector, beloved friend, and cherished member of St. John’s East E234/L123/Batt38. Never Forget.
