CENTERBURG, Ohio – The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday evening, June 14, on U.S. Route 36 near milepost 3 in Knox County.
Authorities say the crash happened at approximately 6:25 p.m. when 39-year-old Harry Young IV of Mount Vernon lost control of a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle while traveling eastbound. The motorcycle veered off the right side of the roadway, striking a traffic sign and then a utility pole.
Young, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by the Central Ohio Joint Fire District to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, where he was later pronounced dead.
His passenger, 36-year-old Samantha Hedrick, also of Mount Vernon, was seriously injured in the crash. She was transported by Delaware County EMS to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus. Authorities confirmed that she was also not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Central Ohio Joint Fire District, and Delaware County EMS. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
