ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — Maryland State Police have released additional information following a tragic car accident Tuesday night that claimed the lives of two men along Interstate 97.
According to authorities, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:03 p.m. near Farm Road, when a Dodge Durango traveling northbound on I-97 veered off the roadway, struck two trees, and ultimately overturned.
The driver, identified as Thomas Oliver Sellman III, 30, of Churchton, and his passenger, Marcus Eric James Jr., 29, of Shady Side, were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to Maryland State Police.
The impact of the crash resulted in extensive vehicle damage and prompted a closure of all northbound lanes of I-97 for approximately four hours as first responders worked to investigate and clear the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and the crash remains under active investigation. Authorities have not ruled out any potential contributing factors, including speed, mechanical failure, or impairment.
The sudden loss of Sellman and James has sent shockwaves through their respective communities. Both men were known and loved in southern Anne Arundel County, where friends and family are now mourning the devastating loss.
