NEWARK, NJ — An 18-year-old man from Paterson was killed and four others wounded in a mass shooting late Monday night in Newark’s Roseville neighborhood, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The incident unfolded around 11:40 p.m. on June 23 near 367 6th Avenue West, close to 13th Street, after Newark police responded to reports of gunfire and a large, disorderly crowd gathering in the area.
When officers arrived on scene, they encountered what officials with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office described as a chaotic and violent scene, with five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Among the victims was Brandyn Waters, an 18-year-old from Paterson, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The four additional victims—identified as two 19-year-old men, a 24-year-old, and a 26-year-old—were also transported to University Hospital and are currently being treated for their injuries. Their conditions have not been released.
Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or motive in the shooting, and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the ongoing investigation.
Residents in the Roseville community have expressed shock and concern following the violence, which adds to a string of recent shootings in the area. Community leaders and local officials are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
