22-year-old Tremaine Jones arrested in ambush shooting of two Milwaukee Police Officers; Kendall Corder and Christopher McCray

MILWAUKEE, WI — A 22-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested in connection with the ambush-style shooting of two Milwaukee Police Department officers that occurred on Wednesday night, June 26, 2025. The suspect, Tremaine D. Jones, was taken into custody without incident at 2:15 a.m. Friday morning. Charges against Jones are currently pending as the investigation unfolds.

According to authorities, Officers Kendall Corder, 32, and Christopher McCray, 29, both assigned to Milwaukee Police Department’s District 2 Station on the South Side, were responding to a Priority 1 shooting call in the 2200 block of N. 24th Street around 9:10 p.m. When the officers arrived at the scene and exited their vehicle in a nearby alley, they were ambushed by a gunman identified as Jones, who opened fire without warning.

Both officers were struck by multiple rounds and were unable to return fire.

Officer Corder sustained a gunshot wound to the upper arm, with one round entering his chest cavity and causing severe internal injuries, including trauma to his heart. He was rushed to Froedtert Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Officer McCray suffered gunshot wounds to his foot and back; he is currently recovering and is expected to undergo surgery to repair the damage to his foot.

Despite the severity of their injuries, both officers are expected to survive.

“This could have been a double tragedy,” said one law enforcement official familiar with the case. “It was a calculated and deliberate attack on our officers while they were doing their jobs—trying to keep the public safe.”

The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the risks officers face every day, particularly when responding to high-risk, violent calls. Authorities described the shooting as an “unprovoked ambush.”

Court records indicate that Jones has no prior felony or misdemeanor convictions, though investigators are working to determine whether he may have had prior encounters with law enforcement or other connections to recent criminal activity in the area.

The Milwaukee Police Department and city officials have not commented on a motive but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. Jones is currently being held in custody, and formal charges are expected to be filed in the coming days.

As the community reacts to this brazen attack, support for Officers Corder and McCray continues to pour in from across the city and beyond. Police departments across Wisconsin and around the country have offered words of encouragement and solidarity, as well as calls for justice.

Milwaukee Police Chief and city leaders are expected to hold a press conference once charges are filed and more information becomes available.

Anyone with additional information related to the shooting is urged to contact Milwaukee Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or submit tips anonymously online.
