MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A tragic shooting late Friday night at Peaches Corner — a beloved Myrtle Beach institution operating since 1937 — has left one man dead and another injured, shaking the local community and prompting an ongoing police investigation.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department confirmed the victim as Grayson Meyers, who was shot and killed during a confrontation inside the historic restaurant, located near the intersection of 9th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard.
Authorities say the incident occurred around 11:15 p.m., following an altercation between Meyers and a 17-year-old employee of Peaches Corner, identified as Evany McCray of Conway. During the dispute, McCray allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and opened fire inside the crowded eatery. Meyers was struck by the gunfire and later died from his injuries.
A second victim — an innocent bystander who was crossing the street at the time — was also hit by a stray bullet near the intersection just outside the restaurant. The extent of that individual’s injuries has not yet been publicly released.
McCray was quickly apprehended by Myrtle Beach police officers and is now facing a series of serious criminal charges. He has been charged as an adult with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a person under 18.
Officials have not released the motive behind the altercation that led to the deadly shooting, and the investigation remains active. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts are being reviewed as detectives work to piece together the moments leading up to the gunfire.
Peaches Corner, a nostalgic fixture of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk known for its casual, family-friendly atmosphere and more than eight decades of history, has never been the site of such violence in its long-standing operation. News of the shooting has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond, with many locals expressing sorrow and disbelief.
In the wake of the tragedy, Peaches Corner released a brief statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and noting that they are cooperating fully with authorities.
Police are asking anyone with information or video footage from the area at the time of the shooting to come forward.
