A heartbreaking incident in Winston-Salem has claimed the life of a young girl after she and two other children fell into a frozen pond on Thursday, January 16. The victim, identified as 7-year-old Na’Yomi Nadine, was looking forward to celebrating her 8th birthday in April.
Emergency responders arrived at the 4000 block of Duck Pond Court at 5:02 p.m. following reports of three children trapped in the icy water. Life-saving measures were administered to Na’Yomi at the scene before she was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite their efforts, she passed away on Sunday, January 19.
The condition of the other two children remains undisclosed at this time.
The Winston-Salem Fire Department extended their condolences to the family and issued a reminder about the dangers of frozen bodies of water.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family during this unimaginably difficult time,” the department shared in a statement. “We strongly advise residents to avoid walking or playing on frozen ponds, lakes, and streams. Ice in our region is unpredictable and often cannot safely support the weight of individuals or pets. What appears to be stable ice can suddenly give way, leading to life-threatening situations.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Na’Yomi Nadine’s family and the loved ones mourning her loss.
