Caleb Reed Obituary: Mississippi State Baseball mourn the loss of former All-SEC reliever Caleb Reed following battle with cancer

The Mississippi State baseball community and the wider world of collegiate athletics are mourning the loss of Caleb Reed, a beloved former Bulldog and standout All-SEC reliever, who passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. He was a pillar of strength both on and off the field and leaves behind a lasting legacy of athletic excellence, leadership, and character.

Reed was an integral figure in Mississippi State’s baseball resurgence during the early 2010s. A key member of the 2011 Super Regional team and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship squad, he was known for his tenacity on the mound, his leadership in the clubhouse, and his unshakable poise under pressure. During his career in Starkville, he etched his name into the MSU record books, finishing in the top 10 all-time in saves (21), relief appearances (92), and total appearances (96).

Originally from Cleveland, Mississippi, Caleb first rose to prominence as a star pitcher at Bayou Academy, where he led the Colts to back-to-back Class A State Baseball Championships in 2007 and 2008. His dominance on the high school level earned him statewide recognition and a scholarship to play Division I baseball for Mississippi State — a dream realized for a small-town athlete with big-league heart.

In the years following his collegiate career, Reed remained deeply connected to the game, the university, and his community. He was admired not only for his skill and contributions on the field but also for his humility, warmth, and ability to inspire others. Friends, former teammates, and coaches describe him as the kind of person who lifted those around him — a leader by example and a friend to all.

“We’re saddened by the passing of former All-SEC reliever Caleb Reed,” Mississippi State Baseball said in a statement. “Caleb was an integral part of our 2011 Super Regional squad and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship team. Our condolences to his family, friends and teammates.”

The Bolivar Bullet, a local newspaper in Reed’s hometown, paid tribute to his memory in a heartfelt message shared online:
“The local community is mourning the loss of one of its sports greats as Caleb Reed passed away yesterday afternoon. The Bolivar Bullet continues to keep the Reed family in their prayers.”

Caleb’s fight with cancer was marked by the same courage and determination that defined his pitching career. He faced the disease with grace, supported by a strong network of family, friends, and former teammates. His strength inspired many who followed his journey, reminding others of the power of perseverance and faith in the face of adversity.

Caleb Reed is survived by his loving family and a community that will continue to honor his memory for generations to come. His life was a testament to commitment, resilience, and the power of sports to shape not only athletes but remarkable human beings.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced. Mississippi State University and members of the baseball community are expected to honor his memory with tributes in the coming days.

May Caleb Reed’s legacy live on in the hearts of those he inspired — as a Bulldog, a champion, and a man of great integrity.
