THOMPSON, Iowa — A tragic collision on Iowa Highway 9 Saturday afternoon has left one motorcyclist dead and three others injured, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. just east of Thompson, near the intersection with 150th Avenue. Authorities say a 2015 Buick Encore, driven by 95-year-old LeRoy Weaver of Buffalo Center, was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons.
The vehicle first sideswiped a westbound 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by 64-year-old David Raak of Spirit Lake, then struck a second motorcycle— a 2004 Harley-Davidson driven by 21-year-old David Raak, also of Spirit Lake—head-on.
The younger Raak was ejected from his motorcycle and landed on the north shoulder of the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The elder Raak, Weaver, and a third passenger, 21-year-old Kayla Hudelson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, were all injured in the crash. They were transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been released.
Following the impact, the Encore came to rest in the north ditch. The sideswiped motorcycle also veered off and ended up on the north shoulder.
Emergency crews from Forest City EMS and Lake City EMS responded to the scene.
The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
