It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Vernon Lee, a beloved coach, mentor, and community leader, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in February, 2025, near Freedom High School. Vernon was a dedicated basketball coach at Northern Virginia State University and an influential figure in the lives of many young athletes.
Vernon Lee was a lifelong lover of basketball and sports education. From an early age, he demonstrated a passion for mentoring and coaching, leading him to a career where he inspired generations of athletes to excel both on and off the court. His impact stretched beyond the game, as he instilled discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship in his players.
Vernon Lee served as the head basketball coach at Northern Virginia State University, where he was highly respected for his leadership, commitment, and ability to bring out the best in his players. His coaching philosophy extended beyond the game—he emphasized the importance of education, teamwork, and integrity. Under his guidance, many of his students went on to achieve great success in their athletic and academic careers.
Beyond coaching, Vernon was deeply involved in community initiatives, organizing youth development programs, summer basketball camps, and mentoring at-risk youth. His dedication to making a difference in young people’s lives earned him recognition and the admiration of the community he served so tirelessly.
Vernon’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, friends, students, and colleagues.
