WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE, ON — An 18-year-old Oshawa man is facing multiple charges in connection with a devastating head-on collision on Highway 48 that killed a father of three and left four others injured on Sunday, August 3.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the crash occurred just before 9:30 p.m. between St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Commons in the Ballantrae area. Officers from the OPP Aurora Detachment responded to the scene, where 35-year-old Andrew Cristillo was pronounced dead. Four passengers were transported to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Investigators allege the driver of the second vehicle fled the scene but was located shortly afterward with assistance from York Regional Police. He was taken into custody without incident.
Jaiwin Kirubananthan, 18, of Oshawa, is now charged with:
- Dangerous driving causing death
- Three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm
- Failing to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death
- Public mischief
Kirubananthan remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, August 8. The investigation is ongoing.
Cristillo, remembered as a loving husband and devoted father, leaves behind his wife Christina, who is currently battling breast cancer, and their three young daughters — Leah, Chloe, and Ella. Friends say he was a playful, caring man whose absence will leave a lasting void.
“This family’s world has been shattered, and their future is uncertain,” a close friend said.
Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the crash to contact the OPP Aurora Detachment.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help support the Cristillo family, assisting with recovery, ongoing care for the children, and the stability Andrew worked tirelessly to provide.
