ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police are investigating a double shooting that left a 2-year-old child and a woman injured Wednesday afternoon in the city’s 19th Ward.

According to Cmdr. Michael DeSain of the Rochester Police Department, officers were called to Westmoreland Drive shortly after 1 p.m. after learning that two victims had been brought to Strong Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. Both the child and the woman sustained gunshot wounds but are expected to survive, as their injuries have been described as non-life-threatening.
Police have not yet made any arrests, and details surrounding the incident remain unclear. Investigators have not confirmed whether the victims were targeted or struck in crossfire. Cmdr. DeSain emphasized that detectives are actively working to determine what led to the shooting but noted that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
A section of Westmoreland Drive was closed to traffic for several hours as investigators canvassed the area and collected evidence. Officers were seen speaking with residents and reviewing potential surveillance footage from nearby homes.
Cmdr. DeSain described the neighborhood as generally quiet and said such violence is uncommon. “It’s a nice street,” he said. “Very unusual for this type of incident to happen.”
The identities of the victims have not been released, and police are urging anyone with information to contact the Rochester Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
