Baton Rouge, La. – The Baton Rouge Police Department has launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally shot Saturday night while attempting to intervene in an argument at a local apartment complex.

Authorities say officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Sycamore Apartments, located off North Foster Drive, shortly before 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered 27-year-old Jaray Washington suffering from a gunshot wound. Washington was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
According to investigators, Washington had stepped in to break up an argument between others when the situation escalated. Police allege that during the confrontation, Washington was shot by Trevionte Dequone Simpson, who fled the scene.
Detectives are actively searching for Simpson, who has been identified as the primary suspect in Washington’s killing. Authorities have not yet released details on the circumstances surrounding the dispute that led to the gunfire.
The shooting has shaken the community, with neighbors describing Washington as someone who was often willing to help others and step in to de-escalate situations. His death has left family and friends devastated, as many struggle to come to terms with the loss of a young man who they say tried to do the right thing.
The Baton Rouge Police Department is urging anyone with information about Simpson’s whereabouts or the events leading up to the shooting to contact detectives immediately. Crime Stoppers is also accepting anonymous tips.
The investigation remains ongoing.
