VICKSBURG, Miss. — Authorities are investigating after the body of a man was discovered Monday morning in a wooded area near the Ameristar Casino in Vicksburg.

The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Corey Zukatis, a Brandon resident who had been experiencing homelessness, according to Warren County Coroner Doug L. Huskey.
Officials said Zukatis was found around 10:30 a.m. by a passerby walking in the area. The location, just off the casino property line and not far from the Mississippi River, was quickly secured by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office as investigators processed the scene.
No details have been released regarding the circumstances of his death. Authorities have not said whether foul play is suspected and are awaiting further results from the coroner’s office to determine the official cause and manner of death. The Vicksburg Police Department assisted deputies in examining the area, which was closed to the public for several hours on Monday.
The discovery has raised concern in the community, particularly because of Zukatis’ struggles with homelessness. Advocates note that individuals without stable housing face heightened risks from health issues, unsafe environments, and limited access to resources.
Family members have been notified of his passing. Friends and relatives remembered Zukatis as someone who had faced challenges but was still loved deeply. “Every life has value, and Corey’s passing is a tragedy for those who knew and loved him,” one family acquaintance said.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with potential witnesses who may have seen Zukatis in the hours leading up to his death. The wooded area where he was found is commonly visited by both locals and tourists because of its proximity to the casino.
Community leaders are urging those in need to seek available support services, including local shelters, nonprofit organizations, and mental health resources. “This is a reminder that people in our community are often hurting quietly,” one outreach worker said. “It’s important that we continue offering compassion and assistance.”
Authorities stress that the investigation remains active and more information will be released as it becomes available.
