Massive Fire Ravages Brooklyn Warehouse Housing Artist Studios; 2 Firefighters Injured

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A massive overnight fire tore through a Brooklyn warehouse that housed artist studios and small businesses, leaving the building heavily damaged and sending two firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries.

The blaze broke out just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at the warehouse located at 481 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, according to the FDNY.

Fire Spread Quickly

Officials said the fire escalated rapidly, with heavy flames engulfing the second, third, and fourth floors of the building. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof as crews battled the inferno from both the street and nearby waterways.

More than 200 firefighters were deployed to the scene. Crews worked for hours to contain the blaze, which sent thick smoke billowing over the neighborhood.

Community Impact

The warehouse is home to numerous artists and small businesses and serves as the centerpiece of the upcoming Red Hook Open Studios, a popular neighborhood event scheduled for next month. With the building now heavily damaged, questions remain about the future of both the event and the livelihoods of those who worked inside the space.

Residents in the area described the fire as devastating. “This warehouse has been a hub for the creative community here in Red Hook,” said one neighbor. “It’s heartbreaking to see it destroyed.”

Injuries and Investigation

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while working to contain the flames and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. No civilian injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the FDNY’s fire marshals.
