BERWYN, Ill. — A tragic shooting outside Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn on Tuesday afternoon left three people dead, including an assistant principal at the school, authorities confirmed.

What Happened
According to Berwyn police, officers heard gunfire shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday near the school, located in the 6400 block of 16th Street. When they arrived, they saw a man firing a rifle into another vehicle. As officers approached, the suspect turned the gun on them, opening fire. Police did not return fire and took cover.
Authorities said the gunman then fatally shot two people in the car before taking his own life.
Victim Identified
On Wednesday morning, Berwyn North School District 98 identified one of the victims as Nerissa Lee, the assistant principal at Lincoln Middle School. Superintendent Michelle Smith shared the news in a statement, calling Lee’s death “a profound loss” for the school community.
“It is with great sadness that I announce to you that Nerissa Lee, Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, lost her life in yesterday’s tragic shooting,” Smith wrote.
Community Impact
Police and school officials said the shooting appeared to be domestic-related and stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the school community.
Classes were canceled Wednesday, but the district opened the school to provide access to social workers and grief counselors for students and staff. Officials said instruction will resume Thursday with additional supports in place.
Parents, students, and community members gathered outside the school on Wednesday, leaving flowers and messages at a growing memorial. Many remembered Lee as a dedicated educator who cared deeply for her students.
