The Pottsville community is mourning the loss of Kevin Keating, former Crimson Tide head football coach and longtime English teacher, who passed away Thursday at the age of 70. His name is deeply woven into the history of Pottsville athletics and education, leaving a lasting impact on both the classroom and the football field.
Beloved Coach, Teacher, and Mentor
Kevin Keating dedicated more than three decades to Pottsville Area High School, serving as both an educator and a coach. Beginning his teaching career in 1980, he spent 34 years guiding students through literature and language while imparting lessons that extended far beyond textbooks. His approachable manner, kindness, and steady guidance made him a favorite among students, who valued both his knowledge and mentorship.
On the football field, Keating became a legendary figure. After several years as an assistant, he took over as head coach in 1986, leading the Crimson Tide for more than 20 seasons across two stints. His career record of 166-110-4 remains the best in Pottsville football history. For his players, he was far more than a coach—he was a mentor, motivator, and role model who pushed them to reach their full potential.
The 2000s were particularly remarkable under Keating’s leadership. His teams won three consecutive District XI Championships from 2004 to 2006, alongside three Eastern Football Conference titles. In 2005 and 2006, Pottsville finished as Class 3A state runners-up, coming just short of a state championship. These achievements brought immense pride to the community and stand among the most memorable moments in the program’s history.
After stepping down in 1999, Keating continued coaching at Lafayette College before returning to Pottsville in 2003, reaffirming his dedication to his hometown team. His final coaching role was with Shenandoah Valley, where he served as head coach from 2017 to 2019, demonstrating his unwavering passion for the game even in the face of health challenges.
In 2018, Keating was inducted into the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing his immense contributions to high school athletics.
