A 19-year-old Memphis man, known by the nickname “Thirt Slime,” has been arrested and charged in connection with the tragic shooting death of a two-year-old boy in the city’s Orange Mound neighborhood, officials confirmed Tuesday.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the suspect, identified as Jalen Thomas, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, criminal attempted first-degree murder, employing a firearm with intent to commit a felony, and two counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. The charges stem from a shooting in April 2025 on Josephine Street, where the toddler was fatally struck by a stray bullet while playing outside with his uncle, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Authorities reported that Thomas was taken into custody on October 28, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., following a coordinated operation by the Memphis Safe Task Force in the 1000 block of S. Lauderdale Street. Law enforcement officials praised the collaboration between local and federal agencies that led to his arrest.
The shooting shocked the Orange Mound community, leaving residents heartbroken and demanding justice for the young victim. Neighbors and family members have continued to grieve, remembering the child as a joyful, energetic boy whose life was senselessly cut short.
“This was an innocent child just outside enjoying the day,” one community member said. “No family should have to bury their baby because of violence like this.”
Authorities say the investigation remains active as detectives continue to gather evidence and identify all individuals involved. Police and federal officials are urging anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward to assist in ensuring justice for the victim and his family.
The tragic case underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence in Memphis and its devastating impact on local families and neighborhoods.
