The Sunshine Coast community is reeling after the tragic and untimely passing of Finley Bone, a beloved 21-year-old footballer whose life was cut short in a freak lightning strike at the Cooroy Sporting Complex on Thursday afternoon. Her sudden death has left family, teammates, and friends heartbroken, as tributes pour in for a young woman remembered for her bright smile, loving heart, and passion for the game she adored.
A Tragic and Unforeseen Accident
According to reports, Finley was practicing goal-kicking with her partner when the lightning bolt struck unexpectedly, despite clear skies and no rain at the time. Emergency crews and critical care paramedics responded swiftly, rushing Finley to Nambour Hospital in critical condition. Tragically, despite their best efforts, she could not be saved.
Her grieving mother, Donna Markert, described Finley as “a beautiful, kind, and caring young woman” whose life was taken far too soon. Through tears, she shared, “No one can believe this happened. Finley was only 21 and had her life taken away in a minute.”
A Life Fueled by Passion and Purpose
Finley was deeply loved within the Noosa Lions Football Club, where she played for the FQPL3 Women’s team and dedicated her time to coaching the Under-12/13 girls squad. To her teammates and young players, she was more than just an athlete — she was a mentor, a role model, and a friend who led with heart both on and off the field.
Her family shared that football was one of Finley’s greatest passions. “Fin was a sports tragic,” her mother said. “We’re taking solace knowing she was doing something she loved — it’s just so tragic.”
