The Urbandale community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 15-year-old Miles Phipps, a student at Urbandale High School, who tragically died by suicide. His passing has devastated family, friends, classmates, and educators, all of whom are now mourning a bright young life gone too soon.

Miles was known for his gentle personality, imaginative mind, and talent for music. He loved playing guitar, often filling his home with melodies that reflected both creativity and emotion. Those closest to him say he had a unique ability to spread joy — whether through his sense of humor, his quiet kindness, or the way he looked out for others.
Loved ones remember Miles for his playful side as well — from his quirky jokes to the fuzzy toy worms he would leave around the house to make others laugh. His humor, heart, and effortless ability to bring light to those around him will be remembered forever.
Friends describe Miles as deeply empathetic, someone who made people feel safe, understood, and valued. Teachers admired his curiosity and individuality, and family members say his presence made even ordinary days feel special.
Community Gathering to Honor His Memory
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Sunday, November 9 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Giovannetti Shelter at Walker Johnson Park (8900 Douglas Ave, Urbandale). The event will allow the community to come together in remembrance, share stories, and celebrate the love, laughter, and joy that Miles brought into the world.
Instead of flowers, Miles’ family plans to create a memorial in one of his favorite outdoor spaces — potentially a park bench or a tree — as a peaceful tribute to the serenity and comfort he found in nature. Contributions toward this memorial can be made via Venmo at @Ashley-Campbell-515.
His family shared a heartbreaking message, expressing the devastation they now face:
“Yesterday our baby took his last breath on earth and will be forever missed. All 15 years Miles was here, he was so amazing and he was so loved by so many. He never hurt a soul and made everyone smile, whether with his guitar or his silly fuzzy worms.”
Miles’ passing serves as a painful reminder of the unseen battles many young people endure. His family hopes his memory will encourage more conversations about mental health, compassion, and support — especially among teens and families.
Though his life was short, Miles’ impact was profound. The Urbandale community now holds tight to the music, the laughter, and the love he leaves behind.
