Potchefstroom, South Africa – Tragedy struck the Potchefstroom business community on Monday morning when two brothers from the well-known Fourie family, owners of the popular fried chicken brand Chubby Chick, were shot at their business premises. Jonathan Fourie was fatally shot, while his brother, Deon Fourie, remains in critical condition.

Police confirmed the incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. at Luitingh Street in the Potch Industrial Area. Authorities say a 73-year-old suspect met with the brothers at the business before allegedly drawing a firearm and opening fire. Jonathan Fourie was pronounced dead at the scene, and Deon was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Security personnel at Chubby Chick reportedly fired at the suspect during the attack. The 73-year-old sustained injuries and is currently hospitalized under police guard.
The Fourie brothers were well-known figures in the Potchefstroom community, actively involved with the Potch-Dorp Rugby Club and recognized for their contributions to local business and civic life.
