Brian and Stella Gallagher Cork Obituary News: Nephew Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of Aunt and Brutal Assault on Uncle in Ballinlough

The Ballinlough community in Cork is reeling after a violent stabbing on Monday night left one woman dead and her husband in serious condition. Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s—believed to be a nephew of the couple—in connection with what investigators are calling a deeply distressing domestic incident.

The victims have been identified locally as Brian and Stella Gallagher, long-time residents of the Shrewsbury Downs estate. The couple, both chemical engineers, had lived in the neighborhood for nearly 20 years and are parents to four adult children.

Emergency Response and Arrest

Emergency services rushed to the scene at approximately 9:15 p.m. after neighbours reported a disturbance outside one of the homes. Members of the Armed Support Unit assisted Gardaí as they responded to what quickly escalated into a critical situation.

Shortly after the attack, residents received an urgent message through a neighbourhood WhatsApp group advising them to stay indoors and secure their homes. Despite rapid medical efforts, Stella Gallagher was later pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital (CUH). Her husband Brian underwent emergency surgery and remains in serious but stable condition.

The suspect, armed with a knife, was arrested at the scene without further incident. Gardaí say he is known to the couple and was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigators confirmed that the knife believed to have been used in the attack has been recovered. The suspect’s medical fitness for questioning was due to be assessed by a doctor Monday evening.

Stella Gallagher’s body has been transferred to the CUH morgue, where a post-mortem examination is expected to take place Tuesday afternoon.

Community in Shock

The normally quiet estate of red-brick family homes was left shaken by the violence. Neighbours described scenes of panic and disbelief.

“I heard shouting and then saw a man running past,” one neighbour said. “I locked my doors straight away. You never expect something like this here.”

Another resident described the Gallaghers as warm, private people who were well-respected in the community. “They’re a lovely family. It’s heartbreaking. We’re all hoping Brian recovers.”

By Tuesday morning, Gardaí had cordoned off the area and launched a full technical examination. A shattered ground-floor window on a neighbouring property and debris scattered in a front garden indicated the intensity of the struggle.
According to neighbours, Stella Gallagher managed to reach a nearby green area before collapsing. A local doctor provided immediate aid until paramedics took over.

Major Investigation Underway

Gardaí conducted door-to-door inquiries early Tuesday as forensic specialists from the Cork City Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit examined the scene. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified, and a Senior Investigating Officer has been assigned to lead the case.

An incident room has been established at Anglesea Street Garda Station, and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support the Gallagher family as the community grapples with the tragedy.

The investigation remains active, and Gardaí are urging anyone with information to come forward.
