NorthPark Mall Fatal Shooting: Panic, Heavy Police Response, and Lockdown After Reports of Gunfire at NorthPark Center in Dallas

A night of routine shopping turned chaotic on Friday when reports of gunfire inside NorthPark Center triggered a massive law enforcement response and sent terrified shoppers scrambling for safety.

The disturbance began shortly after nightfall in the mall’s busy food court, where witnesses say a sudden, explosive sound echoed through the area. Panicked crowds overturned chairs, abandoned meals, and bolted toward exits as confusion quickly gave way to fear.

“Everyone just started running,” one shopper recalled. “People were screaming and pushing to get outside. It was absolute panic.”

Video circulating on social media captured the frantic moments as diners ducked beneath tables before sprinting away from the scene.

Dallas Police, joined by additional local agencies and EMS units, swarmed the mall within minutes. Officers initiated a rapid, methodical sweep of the building, clearing sections and escorting shoppers and employees out store by store. Roads around the mall were cordoned off as emergency vehicles filled the area, and authorities urged the public to avoid NorthPark Center altogether.

Early reports suggested an active shooter, but investigators later said the loud bang that sparked the panic may have been caused by dry ice placed inside a water bottle—an act that can create an explosive noise similar to gunfire. As of now, no injuries have been reported.

Despite the revised assessment, police have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the disturbance, and the investigation remains active. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine who was responsible and whether the incident was intentional.

The mall remained on lockdown for an extended period Friday evening as officers continued their sweep and attempted to restore order. Shoppers who had been sheltering inside stores were gradually escorted out by police.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or captured video is urged to contact Dallas Police as they work to piece together what happened.

This is a developing story. More updates will be provided as additional information emerges.
