Boston authorities have identified the inmate who died following a violent incident inside the Suffolk County House of Correction on Sunday night. The victim, 32-year-old Shacoby Kenny of Boston, was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital, sparking multiple investigations into what happened behind the walls of the South Bay facility.
According to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the disturbance began on the evening of March 4 when custody staff reported that Kenny began exhibiting erratic and aggressive behavior inside his housing unit. Officials say Kenny allegedly attacked several correctional officers before running through the unit in an apparent attempt to evade detention. Officers ultimately restrained him, but shortly afterward, Kenny became unresponsive while in custody.
Medical personnel on site administered emergency care, and Boston EMS rushed Kenny to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Sheriff’s Office has stated that the sequence of events appears connected to Kenny’s behavior and the struggle that followed.
However, competing accounts from inside the facility have added urgency to the investigation. Several inmates claim Kenny was beaten by officers, alleging he was struck multiple times before collapsing. These claims have not been verified, but they are now a central focus of inquiries being conducted by both the Boston Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office’s internal investigators.
Kenny had been housed at the South Bay complex since February 2025. Court records show he faced charges including assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery on a person over 65, and assault with a dangerous weapon. He had also undergone a previous stint at Bridgewater State Hospital in July for mental health evaluation.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed it is monitoring the case closely. Officials say a full review—including witness interviews, surveillance footage analysis, and autopsy results—is underway to determine the exact cause and manner of Kenny’s death.
No staff members have been publicly identified or placed under disciplinary action at this time. Authorities say additional information will be released once the internal and external investigations conclude, leaving the community awaiting answers in a case raising renewed questions about transparency and safety within local correctional facilities.
