A fatal shooting just outside the town limits of Chadbourn on Sunday afternoon has left one man dead and another facing serious criminal charges, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a residence along Dudney Lane on Sunday, December 21, 2025, after receiving reports of a shooting. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a male victim unresponsive and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Law enforcement officers immediately began life-saving efforts, including chest compressions, and continued rendering aid until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Despite the sustained attempts to save him, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have identified the victim as David Ray Ivey Jr. His death has sent shockwaves through the local community, where family members and friends are now grappling with the sudden and violent loss.
Investigators reported that one individual was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Following a preliminary investigation by the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, William Cody Inman, 29, of Chadbourn, was formally charged with one count of First-Degree Murder and two counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling.
Inman was transported to the Columbus County Detention Center, where he remains incarcerated without bond, according to jail records.
Columbus County Sheriff William A. Rogers praised the swift response of deputies and emergency personnel, noting that officers did everything possible in an effort to save the victim’s life. Sheriff Rogers described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy for the victim’s family and the wider community.
“This is a devastating loss,” Rogers said in a statement. “Our deputies responded quickly and worked tirelessly under extremely difficult circumstances. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones affected by this senseless act of violence.”
The sheriff added that his office is committed to pursuing justice and ensuring accountability as the case moves forward through the legal system.
At this time, investigators have not released additional details regarding the events leading up to the shooting, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also not indicated whether further charges may be forthcoming.
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office has asked anyone with information related to the case to come forward as the investigation continues.
