Tom Dingle Obituary – Cause of Death: Further details released after body of missing student was found in Lancashire woodland

The search for missing student Tom Dingle has ended in tragedy after a body believed to be his was discovered in woodland in Lancashire on Christmas Day.

In a statement released by Lancashire Constabulary, police confirmed that at 3.12pm on December 25 they were contacted by a member of the public who had found a man deceased in woodland off Lees Lane in Dalton. Although formal identification has not yet taken place, officers said they believe the body to be that of 19-year-old Tom Dingle, who had been reported missing earlier this month.

Tom’s family have been informed of the development and are being supported by specially trained officers. Police said their thoughts are “very much with them at this extremely distressing time” and asked that the family’s privacy be respected as they come to terms with the devastating news.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed that Tom’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared and passed to HM Coroner in due course, who will determine the formal cause of death.

The discovery brings a heartbreaking conclusion to an extensive search effort that saw police, volunteers, and members of the public share appeals and information in the hope of finding Tom safely. Officers acknowledged the widespread support shown during the search, thanking everyone who shared appeals and assisted in any way.

“This is not the outcome anybody wanted,” the statement said, reflecting the deep sadness felt by all those involved in the search and by the wider community.

Further updates will be provided if and when appropriate, but police have reiterated their request for privacy for Tom’s family during this difficult time.
