Andres Arizmendi Harlingen Shooting: Active Shooter After Vehicle Chase, Shots Fired in Harlingen

Authorities are investigating an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a high-speed vehicle pursuit and reports of gunfire in Harlingen on Christmas Day.

According to the Harlingen Police Department, the incident began along Commerce Street near an H-E-B store and continued through the area near Peter Piper Pizza before coming to an end near East Harrison Avenue.

Police said the pursuit concluded Friday afternoon at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Business 77, where several law enforcement agencies responded. Officers from the Harlingen Police Department, Cameron County authorities, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and emergency medical services were all on scene. The intersection was closed using crime scene tape as investigators conducted their work.

In a news release, police identified Andres Arizmendi as a suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated assault involving a family member. Authorities said Arizmendi fled the area and is believed to be armed and dangerous. The public is advised not to approach him and to contact law enforcement immediately with any information regarding his location.

A city spokesperson confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public and stated that all law enforcement personnel involved in the incident are safe.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area as traffic was temporarily rerouted during the investigation.

The Harlingen Police Department continues to ask for the public’s assistance as the investigation remains ongoing.
