Aitkin County, MN – A tragic accident on Saturday, March 16, 2024, claimed the life of a Crow Wing County man when his vehicle went airborne, struck a tree, and rolled over in a deadly crash on Highway 18, north of Lake Mille Lacs.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP), the incident occurred when 77-year-old Leon Schefers of Ironton was driving his pickup truck along the highway. For reasons still under investigation, his vehicle became airborne off a driveway approach, leading to a catastrophic collision. The pickup crashed into a tree before overturning and landing on its roof in a roadside ditch.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Schefers was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released any additional details about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash report noted that road conditions were dry at the time, and Schefers was wearing his seatbelt.
Investigators are working to determine whether speed, a medical emergency, or other factors contributed to the accident. The Minnesota State Patrol, along with local emergency personnel, conducted scene cleanup and roadway safety measures following the crash.
Friends and family of Leon Schefers are mourning his sudden passing, remembering him as a valued member of the Ironton community. Funeral arrangements and additional tributes are expected to be announced in the coming days.
