MILWAUKEE, WI – A 49-year-old Milwaukee woman has been formally charged in connection with a deadly shooting outside a local bar early Sunday morning that claimed the life of one woman and left her sister injured.
April Miller faces charges of first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree reckless injury after allegedly opening fire on two women outside Bar 107 Sports Bar and Grill on North Granville Road around 1:07 a.m. Prosecutors say Miller mistakenly believed the sisters had been involved in a bar fight before she fired at them.
Deadly Confrontation Outside the Bar
According to investigators, security had removed all patrons from the bar following an altercation. Moments later, Miller allegedly shot at the victims as they sat inside their vehicle near an SUV.
Surveillance footage captured the sisters’ car positioned next to the SUV before suddenly speeding away and crashing across the street. When officers arrived, they found 33-year-old Brenisha Butcher dead inside the vehicle, while her 30-year-old sister was located injured in the bar’s entryway.
Witnesses and Suspects Speak Out
Passengers in the SUV later contacted police, confirming that Miller was the shooter and that the sisters had no involvement in the earlier bar fight. Additionally, a witness told police that Miller admitted to the shooting, reportedly saying, “I thought those were the (people) that were trying to get us.”
Authorities tracked Miller down and arrested her on Tuesday at a hotel, where she had been hiding following the incident.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Miller is currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail on a $300,000 cash bond. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 28, where prosecutors will present further evidence in the case.
