54-year-old Army veteran and Gulf War fighter, Corey Gates killed fighting back car thieves in Oak Park

OAK PARK, Ill. — A beloved Army veteran and Gulf War fighter was fatally shot during a carjacking attempt early Friday morning in Oak Park, just moments after finishing a late-night shift at work.

The victim has been identified as 54-year-old Corey Gates, a dedicated phlebotomist and proud military veteran, known for his service and strength of character. According to police, the incident occurred around 1:23 a.m. on South Boulevard, as Gates was making his way home.

Authorities say a group of armed individuals approached Gates in an attempt to steal his vehicle. Rather than surrender quietly, Gates fought back — a final act of bravery in a life marked by courage.

During the altercation, Gates was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Witnesses reported seeing five individuals dressed in black fleeing the scene. Thanks to rapid response by law enforcement, six suspects — including three adults and three juveniles — were taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects or stated what charges they will face. The investigation remains active, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence, including surveillance footage and witness accounts.

Gates, a respected member of the Oak Park community, is being remembered for his commitment to serving others — both in the military and in his civilian career. Friends and colleagues described him as disciplined, kind-hearted, and always willing to lend a hand.

“This is a tragic loss for our entire community,” said one neighbor. “Corey lived his life with honor and didn’t deserve to have it taken this way.”

The Oak Park Police Department is urging anyone with additional information to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly encounter.

A memorial is expected to be organized in the coming days to honor Gates’ life and legacy.
