Malachi Crain Obituary: The University of Alabama mourn the loss of senior killed in tragic camping accident on Saturday

The University of Alabama is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Malachi Crain, a dedicated student, devout Catholic, and cherished member of the campus community, who tragically passed away on Saturday, April 5th, in a camping accident. He was 22 years old.

Malachi, a senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, was not only a brilliant academic mind, but also a spiritual leader and pillar of strength within the Bama Catholic Community. Known for his humility, servant’s heart, and unwavering faith, Malachi held the position of Vice President of Liturgy for 2024, where he faithfully served as an altar server and guided others through the liturgical life of the church.

He led Bible studies and dedicated over two years to mentoring and discipling other young men within the faith community—nurturing their spiritual growth with patience, compassion, and deep conviction. His presence at St. Francis University Parish was a constant source of light and peace for everyone who had the blessing of knowing him.

Malachi’s loss has sent ripples of grief across campus and far beyond. Friends remember him as someone who brought kindness into every interaction, who lived with quiet grace, and who loved both God and neighbor with authentic devotion. He had an infectious joy, a brilliant mind, and a heart that was always open to serve others.

In remembrance of Malachi’s beautiful life and in prayer for the repose of his soul, the community will gather for a Rosary on Thursday, April 10th after the 12:30 p.m. Mass (around 1:00 p.m.) at the Mary Statue in front of St. Francis University Parish, located at:

811 Fifth Avenue, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 35401

A Visitation will be held the same day from 12:00–1:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. at:

Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church
3710 Augusta Rd, Gantt, SC, 29605

In addition, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis University Parish in the coming days, with the date and time to be announced.

Malachi’s death is an immeasurable loss to his family, friends, and the entire University of Alabama and Bama Catholic communities. Yet even in this time of sorrow, we take comfort in knowing that Malachi lived a life of deep faith, generous love, and enduring purpose. He gave his all to God, to others, and to every opportunity he was given.

Please join us in prayer for Malachi’s family and all who are grieving his passing. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Rest in peace, Malachi Crain. Your life was a testament to love, service, and faith. You will never be forgotten.
