Clarks Summit, PA — April 2025 — The Abington Heights High School community is heartbroken to announce the passing of longtime science teacher, mentor, and beloved friend, Barbara Moss, who passed away following a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was 58 years old.
Barbara’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of students, colleagues, and families across the Abington Heights School District, where she dedicated more than two decades to inspiring young minds. Known for her dynamic teaching style, unwavering patience, and infectious curiosity for the natural world, Barbara was more than just an educator — she was a guiding light, a source of strength, and a steady presence for generations of students.
Barbara began her career at Abington Heights in the early 2000s, bringing with her not only a wealth of knowledge but also a passion for connecting science to everyday life. Her classroom was a place of exploration and wonder — where students learned not just to memorize facts but to think critically, ask questions, and fall in love with learning. From biology dissections to environmental field trips, Barbara’s lessons left lasting impressions that her students carried with them long after graduation.
To her colleagues, Barbara was a role model and a friend. She was admired for her integrity, her quiet leadership, and her ability to listen and offer support without judgment. Even as she faced the trials of her illness, Barbara remained steadfast in her dedication to her students and her community — continuing to teach and encourage until she physically could no longer do so.
“Barbara Moss was the heart of the science department,” said one colleague. “She didn’t just teach — she connected. She challenged her students to reach beyond what they thought they were capable of and reminded all of us why we chose this profession. Her presence was a gift.”
Outside of the classroom, Barbara was an advocate for environmental conservation, a lover of hiking and gardening, and an avid reader. Her peaceful demeanor and warm smile made her a cherished presence not only at school but also in the wider Clarks Summit community.
Barbara is survived by her two daughters, Emily and Sarah, her husband of 35 years, Michael Moss, and a wide network of family and friends who will continue to honor her memory and the legacy she leaves behind.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, allowing students, faculty, and community members to come together to remember Barbara and share the many ways in which she enriched their lives. Details will be announced by the school district in coordination with the Moss family.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Lung Association or to the Barbara Moss Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will be established to support Abington Heights students pursuing careers in science or education.
Though Barbara Moss may be gone, her influence will continue to resonate in the halls of Abington Heights and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her passion, strength, and kindness will never be forgotten.
