BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the tragic loss of one of its own after 21-year-old Officer Braydon Butler died in an off-duty accident on April 5. Butler, who began his law enforcement journey at just 14 years old, was remembered as a dedicated and passionate young man with a lifelong commitment to serving others.
Braydon Butler’s introduction to law enforcement came through the Barrow County High School Explorers program, where his passion for the field quickly became evident. His drive and dedication led him to join the sheriff’s office as a detention officer shortly after graduating from high school. He was just four weeks away from completing his training at the Northeast Georgia Police Academy to become a certified deputy sheriff when his life was tragically cut short.
“It’s just tragic that at such a young age his life ended,” said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith. “But in the midst of this loss, his family made the incredible decision to donate his organs. I found out that his donation could impact more than 100 lives. That’s the kind of person Braydon was—selfless, caring, and always wanting to help others.”
Sheriff Smith, who had known Butler for much of his life and even coached him in baseball during his youth, affectionately called him “BB.” He described Butler as someone with a strong moral compass, an infectious smile, and a genuine love for the community he served.
“I’ve watched him grow from a middle schooler into a strong, capable young man,” Smith said. “We’re heartbroken, but we’re also proud. His memory will live on, not only in our department but in the lives he continues to touch through his organ donation.”
In honor of Butler’s service and dedication, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office has officially retired his badge number, DC-21. Sheriff Smith also revealed that the department is working on a way to posthumously appoint Butler as a deputy sheriff, fulfilling a dream he had nearly achieved.
