LAS VEGAS — Elaine Wynn, the pioneering co-founder behind some of the most iconic resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, has died at the age of 82. Her death was confirmed in a statement released early Tuesday morning by the Elaine Wynn & Family Foundation.
Widely recognized as a transformative force in the evolution of modern Las Vegas, Wynn was instrumental in shaping the city’s image as a global destination of luxury and spectacle. Alongside her former husband, Steve Wynn, she co-founded Mirage Resorts and later Wynn Resorts, two powerhouse companies that redefined hospitality and entertainment on the Strip.
Elaine Wynn’s legacy is etched into the skyline of Las Vegas. From revitalizing the historic Golden Nugget on Fremont Street to helping create the opulent Bellagio—an architectural and experiential marvel that set a new standard for luxury resorts—her influence is undeniable. That vision culminated in the opening of two sister properties, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, which remain symbols of elegance and innovation.

Her impact extended well beyond the casino floors. A dedicated philanthropist, Elaine Wynn committed much of her later life to education, the arts, and community development. She served as president of the Nevada State Board of Education and chaired the UNLV Foundation, advocating tirelessly for student achievement and access to quality education.
The Elaine Wynn & Family Foundation became a vehicle for her wide-reaching philanthropy, focusing on children’s welfare, the arts, and civic engagement. A local elementary school in the Las Vegas Valley also bears her name, honoring her lifelong commitment to bettering the lives of Nevada’s youth.
Wynn Resorts added in its tribute that Elaine Wynn “cared deeply about the employees of our resorts,” noting that many still fondly recall working alongside her—especially during the opening of Wynn Las Vegas, which marked its 20th anniversary this month.
“We are deeply saddened by her passing,” the company said. “She was a tireless advocate for Las Vegas, for children and their education, and for the arts. The enduring sense of philanthropy she instilled in our company continues to this day.”
Elaine Wynn is survived by her two daughters, her grandchildren, and a legacy that reaches far beyond the lights of Las Vegas.
