The Pekin, Illinois community is reeling after the tragic loss of two young men, Chase Rhodes and Dawson Reese, who were fatally shot early Thursday morning. Friends, family, and neighbors are mourning the untimely deaths of the 21-year-olds, whose lives were cut short in an act of senseless violence.
The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the early hours at a residence in the 11300 block of Illinois Route 29. Upon arrival, they encountered a harrowing scene: Memphis Rue, 21, was held at gunpoint by Dawson Reese’s father, who had been present in the home. According to authorities, Reese’s father, who had fallen asleep on the living room couch while the young men hung out in the basement, was awoken by the sound of gunshots and Rue’s frantic shouting of, “They’re dead!”
Rushing downstairs, he reportedly found Rue still armed. In a swift and courageous act, he disarmed Rue and held him in the kitchen at gunpoint until deputies arrived. Tragically, both Chase Rhodes and Dawson Reese had succumbed to gunshot wounds by the time help arrived.
Following an investigation, Memphis Rue has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors have also filed a petition to deny Rue pretrial release, citing that his release would pose “a real and present threat to the safety of person(s) or the community.” Rue currently remains in the Tazewell County Jail, awaiting his court appearance. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 20 years to a maximum of 60 years in prison for each count, with a possible additional 25-year enhancement for the use of a firearm.
