KITCHENER, ON — The community of Kitchener is mourning the loss of Christopher Thomas Bender, a devoted father, loving husband, and passionate sports fan, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the age of 49, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Known affectionately by those around him as simply “Chris,” he was a man who wore his heart on his sleeve—kind, generous, and unwavering in his love for family, friends, and the simple joys of life. His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Chris was a lifelong lover of sports, with a fierce loyalty to his favorite teams: the Chicago Bears, Montreal Canadiens, and Toronto Blue Jays. Whether it was a Sunday football game, playoff hockey, or an afternoon at the ballpark, Chris brought the same energy and enthusiasm to cheering on his teams that he brought to every aspect of his life. He had an infectious spirit, the kind that turned casual game-watching into cherished memories with friends and loved ones.
Beyond the stadium lights and scores, Chris had a deep appreciation for the quiet moments too. He found peace each summer at Ipperwash Beach, where laughter echoed from beach towels and barbecues. He loved golf and the friendly rivalries it sparked with friends, and he could often be found at the poker table with his signature grin and calm demeanor—always in it more for the camaraderie than the chips.
Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda, and their two children, Megan and Brady, who were the center of his world. His legacy lives on in them—through their strength, humor, and kindness. He also leaves behind his brother Cory and sister-in-law Shannon, and their daughter Clara, all of whom shared a deep familial bond. Chris was predeceased by his parents, Marilyn (2023) and Randy (2021), whose guidance and love helped shape the man he became.
To know Chris was to feel welcomed, supported, and loved. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen and valued. Whether it was a gesture of help, a heartfelt laugh, or just showing up when it mattered most, Chris lived his life in service to others without asking for anything in return.
As family and friends gather to celebrate his life, they do so with heavy hearts but also with deep gratitude—for the time they shared, the memories they made, and the love that endures.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Chris’s memory to a local cancer foundation or community sports organization—causes he supported and believed in.
Chris Bender may be gone from our sight, but he remains ever-present in our hearts. His legacy is not only in the memories he leaves behind, but in the kindness and joy he spread so effortlessly.
