It is with profound sorrow that Toronto Paramedic Services announces the sudden passing of Advanced Care Paramedic Kevin Mills at the age of 44. Kevin passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, due to unforeseen medical complications. His loss is deeply felt across the entire Toronto EMS community and beyond, as tributes pour in from colleagues, friends, and the many lives he touched through his work and advocacy.
Kevin began his career with Toronto EMS in 2001, quickly distinguishing himself through his compassion, professionalism, and calm presence in times of crisis. He became an Advanced Care Paramedic in 2005, a role he held with great pride. He was known among his peers not just for his medical skill, but for his humanity—the way he treated every patient, every colleague, and every situation with empathy and determination.
In 2009, while on vacation, Kevin sustained a life-altering spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. What could have ended his career or dimmed his spirit instead became a turning point in his life’s mission. Despite the immense challenges he faced, Kevin remained a dedicated member of Toronto Paramedic Services. He transformed personal tragedy into public advocacy, becoming a powerful voice for accessibility, disability rights, and spinal cord injury awareness.
His accomplishments following his injury are nothing short of remarkable. Kevin not only remained active in his work and community—he thrived. He became a fixture in charitable and awareness campaigns, took part in numerous marathons, and inspired countless others through his resilience, optimism, and refusal to let his injury define him. In 2023, Kevin undertook and completed a cross-Canada cycling journey—an extraordinary feat that brought national attention to accessibility and the challenges faced by people living with spinal cord injuries.
To many, Kevin Mills was more than a paramedic. He was a mentor, a motivator, and a symbol of perseverance. Whether attending events like the Toronto Pioneer Luncheon or speaking to schools, first responders, and advocacy groups, he radiated a message of strength, hope, and the belief that anything was possible with the right mindset.
Kevin’s legacy will live on not only in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, but in the causes he championed, the conversations he started, and the communities he helped build. He showed us all what courage looks like—not just in the uniform of a paramedic, but in the daily act of choosing to rise above adversity and serve others.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life is being planned by Kevin’s family, tentatively for the end of May. Details will be announced as plans are finalized, and all who wish to honor Kevin’s memory will be welcome.
As Toronto EMS mourns the loss of one of its most inspiring members, we extend our deepest condolences to Kevin’s family, his colleagues, and the wide circle of friends and admirers he leaves behind. His impact was deep, his spirit indomitable, and his memory will forever be a beacon of strength and compassion.
Rest in peace, Kevin Mills. You were a true hero—in life, in service, and in spirit.
