Sailor Martinez Car Accident – Obituary California: Former Miss Barstow Little Division Pageant contestant identified among 4 killed in Sunday crash on I-40 near Hector Road, San Bernardino County

San Bernardino County, Calif. — A devastating rollover crash on Interstate 40 near Hector Road claimed the lives of four individuals early Sunday morning, including 10-year-old Sailor A. Martinez of Barstow, a former Miss Barstow Little Division Pageant contestant.

The solo-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. on May 4, 2025, in the unincorporated desert region of San Bernardino County. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers from the Barstow Area responded to the scene to find a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck had veered off the westbound lanes, entered the dirt shoulder, and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop. All four occupants—one adult male and three juveniles—were pronounced dead at the scene.

The adult driver, identified only as a 35-year-old man from Yermo, and his relationship to the children has not been publicly confirmed. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office later identified one of the juvenile victims as Sailor Martinez, a bright and beloved local child remembered for her involvement in community events and youth pageants.

The CHP has stated that neither alcohol nor drugs are currently suspected to be contributing factors in the crash. However, the investigation remains ongoing.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” said CHP Barstow Area Lieutenant Adam Carmichall in a statement. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the families affected by this horrific event. This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the importance of roadway safety.”

In the aftermath of the crash, emergency services faced additional challenges due to widespread weekend rainstorms. According to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, poor weather conditions hindered helicopter access and caused additional hazards across major desert highways, including I-15 and I-40. Crews from several high desert stations, including Baker, Needles, and Havasu Landing, responded to numerous incidents throughout the weekend.

Officials continue to urge caution for those traveling in remote or desert regions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vehicle safety, staying prepared with supplies, and avoiding distractions or fatigue behind the wheel.

As the investigation into Sunday’s fatal crash continues, anyone with information is asked to contact Officer S. Herrera at the Barstow CHP Office at (760) 255-5900.

The loss of young Sailor Martinez has sent shockwaves through the Barstow community. Friends, neighbors, and local leaders are mourning the loss of a child remembered for her spirit, kindness, and vibrant presence. Grief counselors are expected to be made available in local schools and community centers in the days ahead.
