LAKE CHARLES, LA – A Lake Charles community is in mourning following the tragic death of a teenage girl who was shot and killed early Tuesday morning at a house party in the University neighborhood.
The victim has been identified as McKenzie Rideau, a student at Lake Charles College Prep (LCCP), where she was a standout volleyball player and member of the school’s flag line. McKenzie was remembered by school officials as a “radiant light” who brought joy and kindness to every room she entered.
The Lake Charles Police Department confirmed the shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Officers responded to reports of gunfire just after midnight at a home located at the corner of Central Parkway and Dolby Street. Authorities said more than 40 shots were fired during the incident.
Neighbors told reporters the house, which is normally quiet, had been rented as a short-term rental for what they believed was a high school graduation party. At the time of the shooting, the residence was reportedly filled with dozens of young people between the ages of 16 and 22.
While police continue to gather information, no arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning. Investigators are actively interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
In the wake of the tragedy, LCCP Principal Dr. Freddie Harrison released a heartfelt statement honoring McKenzie’s life and legacy.
“McKenzie was more than just a student, she was a light,” Harrison wrote. “As a proud member of the volleyball team and our vibrant flag line, McKenzie brought energy, determination, and joy to every practice, every performance, and every moment in between. Her radiant smile and kind heart made it easy for others to feel seen, welcomed, and accepted.”
He described her as someone who embodied compassion and leadership, and who made an indelible impact on the school community.
“Her spirit of compassion, leadership, and friendship will be deeply missed but never forgotten. McKenzie’s impact on our school community is immeasurable,” Harrison continued.
The school is offering grief counseling to students and staff as they process the devastating loss.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Lake Charles Police Department as the investigation continues.
As the community grieves, neighbors, friends, and school staff have begun laying flowers and candles near the site of the incident in McKenzie’s memory.
McKenzie Rideau, a young life full of promise, is now remembered as a symbol of kindness and spirit. The LCCP community asks for prayers and support for her family during this unimaginable time.
