HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (May 20, 2025) — The Hazel Green community is mourning the loss of Dr. Brent Phillip Watson, a respected nurse educator, devoted family man, and faithful servant of Christ, who passed away on May 19, 2025, at the age of 40.
Known for his quiet strength, unwavering compassion, and steadfast Christian faith, Dr. Watson’s impact was far-reaching — both in his professional life as a healthcare provider and educator, and in his personal life as a husband, father, friend, and community leader.
Born on March 31, 1985, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Brent was the beloved son of Phillip and Phyllis Watson. Raised in a home grounded in Christian values, he developed a deep and personal relationship with his faith from a young age — a foundation that shaped every aspect of his life.
Brent met his wife, Kelly, when they were both just 19, and the two shared 18 years of marriage rooted in love, faith, and mutual devotion. Friends and family describe their union as a living example of selfless partnership and biblical love. Together, they raised four children — Taylor, Lauren, Madelyn, and Jillian — whom Brent guided with wisdom, tenderness, and spiritual conviction.
As a father, Brent was hands-on and deeply involved, not only in the daily rhythms of parenthood but in his children’s spiritual journeys. His life as a dad mirrored the words of Deuteronomy 6:6–7, as he intentionally taught and modeled a life centered on Christ.
Professionally, Dr. Watson began his career as a pediatric nurse, known for his gentle demeanor and high standard of care. He later transitioned to academia, joining Calhoun Community College as a nursing instructor, where he mentored and inspired future generations of healthcare professionals with humility and grace.
He also served faithfully at First Baptist Church of Meridianville, where he was a deacon, Bible study leader, and ever-present source of encouragement. Friends recall Brent’s quiet leadership and steady presence — always ready to pray with someone in need, offer sound counsel, or lend a helping hand.
Beyond his professional and church commitments, Brent dedicated his time to serving his broader community. He volunteered with Shine the Light Ministry, coached youth sports, and consistently looked for ways to uplift others, often working behind the scenes without recognition or fanfare.
Brent is survived by his loving wife, Kelly, and their four children. He also leaves behind his parents, Phillip and Phyllis Watson; his sister, Allison (Cody) Martin; his brother, Lance (Laryssa) Watson; and a cherished group of nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his grandmother, Ann Watson; mother-in-law, Denise (Randy) Reynolds; father-in-law, Phillip (Sharon) Blankenship; brother-in-law, Andrew (Shannon) Blankenship; sister-in-law, Maggie Reynolds; and Kelly’s grandmother, Peggy Talley, whom Brent held in deep affection. Brent was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Johnny Henderson.
His passing leaves a profound void, but those who knew him find comfort in the assurance that Brent lived a life of purpose, integrity, and deep devotion to God. His legacy will continue through his family, his students, his church, and the countless lives he touched.
