According to Freeport Police, officers responded to a residence in the 1700 block of South Galena Avenue shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, following a report of gunfire inside the home. Upon entering, officers discovered the bodies of 51-year-old Chad Wirsing and 50-year-old Paul Laird, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Investigators located two firearms at the scene—one near Laird’s body and another tucked into the waistband of his pants. A note affixed to Laird’s body was also recovered, reportedly explaining the motive behind the violence.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the Stephenson County Coroner’s Office, in coordination with Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators, revealed that Wirsing was struck multiple times by gunfire, while Laird sustained a single wound consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot.

Authorities confirmed that both men lived in the residence and emphasized that this appears to be an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public. The official causes of death will be determined following autopsies conducted by the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.

As investigators continue to piece together what led to this tragedy, those who knew Chad Wirsing are mourning the loss of a man remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support of others.

“Chad was an incredible man,” said one friend. “I watched him help so many people in selfless ways. He was a hard-working man who loved his family and friends dearly. He’s gone far too soon.”

The Freeport Police Department has not released further details on the contents of the note or the potential motive, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Community members are encouraged to come forward with any additional information that may assist authorities as they continue to investigate this heartbreaking incident.
